How Do Christians Grow?

small__3370498053What if I told you I was training for a marathon? And not only am I training for this marathon but I’m going to win it. And what if I told you this while chugging a Big Slam of Mountain Dew and munching on my fourth bag of Cheetos?

You’d likely laugh at me and tell me that I’m going to get smoked in this race and I’m probably going to pass out after the first mile.

But would it make a difference if I told you that I was praying really hard about the marathon? Or that I had watched Chariots of Fire and got really pumped up? Or that I’ve been watching old clips of Prefontaine, would that make a difference?

You know that such a thing wouldn’t work. You don’t properly train for a marathon by praying for success and then watching clips of marathon runners. So then why do we think that Christian growth works that way?
