Uncovered: Zombie

Our family loves music. One of the things that I, personally, love about music is its diversity. One of the great joys that I have in life is listening to a well-known song cross genres. This is also a joy for our family. During car rides we play a fun game where we pick a well known song and search for covers of that song on Spotify. Then we decide if we like any of them better than the original. I thought it might be fun to share some of these with you and see which covers you like best. Today we are going to look at Zombie by The Cranberries.

This song was written in response to the 1993 IRA Bombing in Warrington. I’ll confess that I don’t know much about that. I also don’t understand the symbolism of lead singer Dolores O’Riordan being all painted in gold and standing under a cross. But I do know that this was written as a response to war and violence. I also know that the song rocks and was one of my favorite as a teen.  Here is the original:

Recently a band called Bad Wolves was all set to do a cover of the song (with a few updated lyrics). The lead singer from Cranberries was set to provide vocals but she died before being able to lay them down on a track. Again, I don’t understand the gold lady:

This is a pretty interesting version. Is that a xylophone?

When I first saw the band name Ran-D I pictured a guy named Randy playing with a couple turntables in his basement. It is a Dutch guy named Randy, so maybe I was kind of close. This version actually kind of rocks. In my opinion at times it feels a little like building a stairway to nowhere but the more I listen to this version the more I appreciate it. If you don’t want to see an unsightly amount of guy-liner then just listen without watching the video:

If you want an instrumental version that will make you want to go in a hole and cry then consider this by Brooklyn Duo. (It’s actually a really good instrumental):
