Pray For Your Wife: 31 Day Challenge—Day Twenty-Four

Day Twenty-Four: That she would live in grace

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us –Galatians 3:13

If our wives trust in Jesus we know that he has delivered her from the curse of the law. She is free from condemnation and the burden of having to adhere to the whole law. Jesus was accursed for her. Yet, our wives are still tempted to live according to the law. They can get their identity from their performance. They can be shackled by relational legalism. Apart from grace our wives will respond to us according to law, lead our children according to law, and find her worth according to law. Let’s pray that she would live in grace.

Father, thank you for redeeming my wife. Thank you for becoming a curse for her. Thank you that on the cross you swallowed up every ounce of wrath that my wife deserves. Help me to see her as one that has been totally bought by the precious blood of Jesus. I pray, Lord, that she would live by grace all the days of her life. Help her to see how free in Jesus she really is. Rescue her from a heart and mind driven by performance. Help her dance in grace today. You’ve already taken the burden of the law off her back—help her not to pick it back up again. In Jesus name, Amen.

Pray For Your Wife: 31 Day Challenge—Day Twenty-Three

Day Twenty-Three: That she would extend her hand to the poor and needy

She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. –Proverbs 31:20

The mark of someone that has really received grace is that they would care for orphans and widows. Or as this Proverbs states, they open their hand to the poor and reaches out to the needy. Men let us pray that our wives would be marked by this. May they have hearts of sacrifice for the sake of others. In order for her hands to be open to the poor it means that she cannot clinch her fist around her possessions. Pray today that she would be marked by generosity and giving.

Father, I thank you for all that you have given to my wife. I thank you for her giving spirit. Cause her faith to increase so that she can trust you with her possessions. And as she trusts in you more and more help her to open her hands to the poor and needy. Help her to not only give when people asks but help her to pursue those that are needy. Give her wisdom in her giving. Give me grace to encourage her as she extends grace to others. Amen.

What is Sexual Immorality?

For this is the will of God, sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; –1 Thessalonians 4:3

This verse is usually met with a follow up question, “What exactly is sexual immorality?” That, of course, is the sanctified way of asking, “Is it still okay if my girlfriend and I _________?

Because of this question I’ve found it helpful to use the Scriptures to define sexual immorality. Here is how I typically define sexual immorality:

Anything that is intentionally sexually arousing outside the context of marriage.

Anything…

I’ve never found giving someone a list of prescribed activities helpful. Mostly because as Romans 1 indicates the human heart has a tendency of looking for loopholes and finding new ways to sin. Saying “anything that is intentionally sexually arousing” has a way of bringing this back to the heart.

This means if tying your girlfriend’s shoe is somehow arousing, then you need to stop. And certainly this covers anything else that might typically be on that list. The activity itself doesn’t matter as much as what is going on in your heart.

Intentionally Arousing…

I added this word purposefully. Many people beat themselves up because they are naturally aroused by things. That is part of the way that God has made us. When that initial arousal becomes sinful is when you seek a second look, a second touch, etc. for the purpose of recapturing that feeling of arousal. Then it becomes intentional.

I’d also mention that putting yourself in a place where an “accident” might happen—like watching movies with scantily clad people—would fall under the category of intentional.

Outside the Context of Marriage…

Here it might be helpful to consult my definition for marriage. Marriage, properly defined, is God’s context for sexual expression and intimacy. Anything outside of this proper context is inappropriate. And 1 Thessalonians 4 shows us how seriously Jesus takes this commandment:

…that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you…Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Engaging in sexual immorality outside of marriage defrauds another human being, even “lonely” acts, like looking at pornography. Jesus says that he will avenge this sin. I take that very seriously.

Rescue

Jesus is making all things new. This includes our sexuality. Brothers and sisters, let us turn away from sexual immorality and pursue Christ. There is no sexual sin, no matter how ensnaring, that is outside of His power and mercy. He forgives, He heals, and He transforms.

Pray For Your Wife: 31 Day Challenge—Day Twenty-Two

I apologize that this is so late. With moving the blog from Blogger to WordPress things have gotten a little wacky. Here is day twenty two.

Day Twenty-Two: That Christ would heal her wounds

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3

Christ is the Great Healer. He indeed heals up the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Men, our wives are likely wounded. They carry with them wounds from the past; some emotional, some physical, other mental or spiritual. Christ is redeeming this brokenness. Whatever wounds your wife is carrying, pray today that Jesus would give her healing. No wounds is too deep for Christ to fill up with His goodness and mercy.

Father, I am grateful that you heal the brokenhearted and bind up our wounds. Lord, I know that my wife has wounds. And I know that praying for her healing might mean that you have to reopen the wounds to really give her redemption in these areas. Heal the places in her heart that are broken. Bind up her wounds. Overwhelm her with your grace and mercy. Where there were once ashes replace them with your beauty. I look forward to dancing with her in your new heaven. Amen.
