Thought Shards 2/15/14

I’ve long been inspired by Michael Newnham’s Things I Think section on his blog. I’ve tossed around the idea for awhile of doing a similar weekly feature. I’m not sure if it will last but I’ve got random thoughts that aren’t big enough for blog posts and sometimes don’t quite fit on Twitter or Facebook.

Here goes:

  1. “I told you so” is the gold medal in the Fool’s Olympics
  2. I grew up heavily steeped in evangelical revivalism. In such a climate the greatest concern was whether or not someone was saved. That was the end all be all of church life. The pendulum has swung the other way. And now I worry that we assume justification in many of our churches.
  3. What makes me the most sad about Michael Sam is how is humanity is being degraded. His identity is being consumed by his sexuality. He’s being celebrated by many but our sexuality can’t bear the weight of our identities.
  4. On several occasions I’ve sought to add not so well-known bloggers to my feed reader. I’m confident that there are really good bloggers out there that don’t have much of an audience. But it’s difficult to find them. If you fit the bill send me a link in the comments.
  5. I love reading Eugene Peterson.
  6. The winter Olympics would be far more interesting if they were replaced by winter baseball games.
  7. I imagine that when someone has a sticker from the Fraternal Order of Police on their vehicle they are hoping that it’ll keep them from getting pulled over. When I see one, however, I just assume that I’m driving behind someone that is either gullible or finds it impossible to say “no”.
  8. Valentine’s Day might be a commercialized holiday, and you might “show your wife how much you love them throughout the year”, but if you don’t take advantage of this day to show your wife that she is special then you aren’t very wise. Even if she “agrees” with you about the holiday.

  1. I really like this idea. I used to blog in bullet points, and frequently made random top ten lists. I think it needs to make a comeback. Now all I need is a catchy title.
